Transplant Process

Patients who are waiting for a pancreas or kidney-pancreas transplant will be placed on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) wait-list for a deceased organ or organs.

Patients may have the option of accepting a kidney transplant without a simultaneous pancreas transplant in order to be free of dialysis in cases where the pancreas is not readily available for donation.

Endocrinology evaluation will be done to ensure that diabetes control is optimized while waiting for a pancreas transplant.

A common wait-list is shared by all transplant programs in the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance service area

We will accept patients who wish to be listed in more than one service area

A dedicated wait-list team will keep patients and physicians informed about their transplant status

Include medical, psychosocial and financial assessments for the pancreas transplant patient with emphasis on cardiovascular disease and endocrine status (insulin requirements and control) which are major factors in a successful outcome.

After placement on the pancreas wait-list, patients may require periodic re-evaluation. Patients will also need to be available on relatively short notice to receive a donor pancreas should one become available. For patients in distant areas, transportation options can be arranged in advance to ensure timely arrival at Texas Transplant Institute**

The surgical procedures can take between three and six hours for pancreas alone or pancreas-kidney transplantation with a usual hospital stay of seven to 10 days.
