Living Donor Kidney Transplant

Program Features

Recipient Referral and Evaluation

We encourage early referral in order to identify all possible transplant options for our patients.

Referral may be through a nephrologist or dialysis unit.

Self-referrals are also accepted.

Living Donor Identification and Evaluation

We encourage patients to consider any possible living donor options and not to rule out any potential donors until they are evaluated by the transplant team.

Donor evaluation with our dedicated living donor team is designed to be as convenient and efficient as possible to make the process easy for the donor and beneficial for the recipient.

Donors who reside outside the San Antonio area may be screened and evaluated where they live.

All donor expenses for medical evaluation and donation are covered through the recipient's medical benefits.

Living Donor Evaluation Process

  1. Initial telephone screening regarding health issues.
  2. Blood drawn for laboratory studies and initial compatibility testing.
  3. If the donor is incompatible, there are two options:
    • The donor can enter the Incompatible Kidney Exchange Program, or
    • The recipient can be desensitized.
  4. Complete medical examination by a nephrologist.
  5. CT-scan for kidney anatomy evaluation.
(All of the above steps can be done at a location convenient for the donor.)
  6. Final crossmatch and scheduling of transplant date.
Our goal is to accomplish all of these steps within 60 days of the recipient's first visit. All visits and procedures will be scheduled by our team at the donor's convenience with no out-of-pocket expenses for the donor.

Hospital admission on the morning of surgery.

Approximately two-hour laparoscopic surgical procedure to remove the kidney.

Recovery room stay and transfer to the dedicated transplant unit.

Donors will have a private room separate from the recipient’s room on the same floor.

A typical hospital stay is two to three days.

All required medicines and follow-up appointments will be coordinated prior to discharge.

Donors may resume driving and light activity within one week of discharge with a return to work based on their recovery progress and activity required at work.

For more information about testing and evaluation, please refer to the patient education materials.

All living donors have an independent donor team and patient advocate to ensure they have a completely unbiased evaluation of their health and suitability for donation. They also have access to our financial and social work teams to address any potential issues related to time off work, etc.

Deceased Donor Kidney Transplant

Patients who have no options for living kidney donation will be placed on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) wait-list for a deceased donor organ.

Whenever possible, patients will be placed on the wait-list at the time of their first visit.

Repeat visits and re-evaluation studies will be scheduled as needed while waiting for a transplant.

A common wait-list is shared by all transplant programs in the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance service area.

We will accept patients who wish to be listed in more than one service area.

A dedicated wait-list team will keep patients and physicians informed about their transplant status.
